Dirt On My Hands

February, March, and April are prime gardening months in Georgia. After that, It'll be too hot to garden except before sunrise and after sunset. Even then I'll be dripping wet when I come back inside because of our high humidity.

So every spare minute I have, I'm in the garden weeding, moving seedlings, planting, remaking walkways, etc.

I love gardening! I'm determined this year to have a fabulous garden. I want gardens so wonderful that people gasp when they drive by. I want our cottage to be rose covered and have full, blowsy borders of colorful flowers.

When I laid out our gardens in 2000, I thought I'd finish and that'd be it. Ha! They're higher maintenance than a house full of kids! You have to keep at it everyday or they'll just be mediocre; which is what I've had for the last twenty-two years.

Well, this is the year that I go for fabulous! Breathtaking! Stupendous! I'll keep you posted...

Your gardens look beautiful right now. I love your description of what you are aiming for it to be. I'll be looking in.

Just today I was talking to a couple of friends and one described her flower beds like raising several more children.....lots of work. They are!

I admire gardeners. I get hives just thinking about having to replace mulch year after year after year, which is why in the past 9 years here I never put any down - except for one patch this evening after work. First couple of years I was here I planted a handful of gardenias, a couple holly bushes, and over 20 azaleas. Most of the gardenias took, and the holly, but none of the azaleas. I pay my grass man a little bit to cut them all back once a year. That's about all I can do. I love flowers, but I can't keep them alive to save my life. :)

I'll be interested to learn about your garden as you do your posts. My so-called garden could not even be called ordinary! Not yet anyway. Maybe never...I love looking at gardens but have no garden sense at all. Except for a few things in pots...

beautiful photos~!
i'm imagining what it must be like to be out in a warm garden in february~!
we're lucky if we can plant anything by the end of may and such a short growing season as our first killing frosts sometimes come as early as the end of august . . .
i have faith in you. your gardens are going to stop traffic~!

I hope your garden and mine turn out simply amazing this year! :-) My DIL will be gardening with me this year. She's been part of the family since last October. I am looking forward to working with her. My secret to a good garden is using old carpet between the rows. Boy is that nice to kneel down on when I have to weed between plants! Have a lovely garden. I enjoy your pictures. :-)

Oh, fabulous photos and such beautiful gardens. What are those sweet yellow blossoms? I love them.

The yellow blossoms are from a Lady Banks Rose. It's trailing over the roof of the playhouse in one of the images. It would probably do well in Texas. I think it also comes in white. It grows about 15-20' long. I've seen it naturalize up into a tree, and it's amazing!

Debbie -

Good luck with your garden. I seem to be ambitious at the beginning of the season but it is such hard work to keep it going daily.....you are right, you have to attack it every day or the weeds take over. The way the weather has been, we will be able to start early this year.
