Grown Children

I spent a sweet time last night talking with my oldest daughter who is struggling through a particularly rough time with her three little boys.  We were going to watch I Dreamed of Africa but never got around to it.

I am so thankful that my grown children are also my friends.  I told her that I count it an act of God's grace that they still like me and desire my company even though I made many mistakes in their raising.  God has been very gracious in answering a certain prayer I've prayed for over twenty five years.

I prayed that He would fill in all the cracks left from my disciplining  and help them to remember the good and forget the bad.  He is so good, and I am so thankful.

I remember you telling me about praying that, and I often pray that now too.
I keep reminding myself that God is gracious whether times seem easy or hard. I am just as blessed now as other times, when the going seems easier.

I know I am learning lots of importance lessons, but gosh, it is hard! I am just thankful that I have you to listen and encourage me. I can't imagine how much harder it would be if I didn't.

It saddens me sometimes to think that one day my children might not (they might, but maybe not) want to have a friend relationship with me like I have with my mother. Thanks for the inspiration to pray for that!

My daughter likes to tell people what I would say when she was growing up, that I was "raising my own best friend". :)

I'm seeing that happen with my son and his dad, now that Christopher is almost nineteen.

It's wonderful to become less parent (especially when they are parents!) and more friend and "counselor there when you need me".
