Housekeeping-A Poll

I'm conducting a poll this morning, ladies, and the reason is that as I've been working on my daily schedule for this new year, I've allotted what I thought to be a sufficient amount of time to do my housework. Unfortunately, the last two days have been almost nothing but housework. This could be because I'm still putting things away from the holidays, or it may be because we have too much stuff and I spend too much time putting it away.

While I'm willing to give it its due, I don't want to spend all my time every day doing it. There are so many other things and interests I want to pursue. A fine balance is what I wish to establish.

So here's the poll: How much time daily, on average, do you spend doing work related to the maintenance and keeping of your home? I'll not tell you now how many I spend. I don't want to influence you in any way! Your answers will be most appreciated. Thanks!

Daily - probably around 30 min - laundry, dishes, general pickup and straightening, litterbox.

Weekly - closer to an hour for vacuuming and whatever I neglected the past couple of days.

Seasonally - A full day or two of closets, carpet shampoo, wash the outside of the house/porch, wash curtains, general freshening.

None of which is nearly enough but I have a full time job and other responsibilities too, and I live alone so that part both helps (no one else to pick up after) and hinders (no help at all) the matter.

Debbie, I think you would probably get 100 different answers from different ladies :) We live in a 2 bdr duplex, rented, so our "housework" is limited. Tiny yard. No maintenance. And I'm not a housework fanatic, i.e., I don't feel at all compelled to keep things ultra clean and tidy all the time. I tend to do a bunch of housework in one or two days (like laundry, or intense vacuuming), and then not do any for a couple of days. Maybe an average of 30 minutes a day, a little more if you include kitchen duties.

I would say I do an hour or two a day. Most all of that is kitchen maintenance (cooking, doing the dishes) and laundry. I have to squeeze in time to vacuum and dust and mop, and those are the things that often get neglected. I am trying to get more scheduled on those, but always three steps forward, two back for me:)

I would say on a regular day, if you count cooking, kitchen cleaning, and laundry, plus bed-making and cleaning the bathroom sink with Kleenex, I spend about an hour and a half on housekeeping, more or less.

If I take out the cups of tea, listening to Radio 4, checking facebook, blog and email, reading just one or ten more chapters of x, checking facebook, blog and email, I probably clock up no more than two hours a day which is not enough. Lots of that is washing dishes and turning laundry loads around. If I sort myself out I can have the place comfortably clean and tidy on two decent but whole mornings a week.

Hmmmm. I don't really know how much time I spend on housework. Bill helps and we aren't very messy. I would like a once-a-week or two helper to do the heavy cleaning. I do far less cleaning since I started working nine years ago and we're still happy at home.

I never have figured out my time spent on cleaning and housework, but I suppose it might amount to an hour a day which would include cleaning up the kitchen, dishes, tidying, a load of laundry. With just the two of us now, I do much less housework, but some days I try to do lots of it and then coast along for a few days.

Some days I find myself with the energy and the mood to really clean and when the mood strikes, I give in to it!

Oh wow, I have never thought about this before. I do know it took me an hour and a half to take all the ornaments off of the tree and that wasn't even the lights or taking the tree apart. I probably do not spend as much time as I should and then try to make up for it all in one fell swoop which makes me tired and cranky. Sooo I hope you post more of what you do. I would like to know. Lovely picture.

Debbie, as I've mentioned, I have low housekeeping standards, especially in the winter. The cold takes so much out of me and most of my time is spent keeping the animals health, keeping the fire going and making sure we all eat.
At www.timewarpwife.com, I printed off a weekly housekeeping schedule and it's helped me a lot. It's not so much I do what she suggests, it's that it's given me a foundation to make my own list. Let's face it, anything we "own", we're going to have a better chance of keeping it going.
Dave and I had someone come in every week because he'd rather I spend time with him instead of cleaning. Gosh, I miss those days!
